Yes it was a sad day when Tigi announced that they were discontinuing the Curls Rock Range – we almost shed a tear!!! But a new generation has come to Richard John!!! Curlesque is the range that will take over from the Curls Rock collection and involves a sexy new look - I’m biased because the bottles are my favourite colour!!!

I haven’t personally had any experience with the products as yet which is why I am challenging a few of the stylists over the road to try them out and let me know how they get on.

As of April 1st Richard John.co.uk will have a new part to the blog….Product of the Month!

 Its ok you don’t have to fall off your chair with excitement!! We just think its about time we showed you some of the products we have to offer in more depth, get a stylists opinion (if they’re not too busy!!) and generally be able to give you a proper lesson in how to use these products.

The reason for us to do this???

 Well, lets be honest, we pick up the bottle because its our favourite colour or someone remotely influential has said and I quote “Oh Dahling, you must try this. Its the latest product don’t you know!!!” and thus, in sheep mode we see the shiny bottle on the shelf and go for it, with all the confidence of a first time sky diver! The tall, beautiful girl behind the desk takes one look at the bottle and says “are you ok with how to use this product? Of course we all answer “yes” because to answer no would be mortifying! Come on we’ve all done this!!

We are aiming to dispell some of this anxiety. We would really appreciate it if you could send us suggestions for products that maybe you have on the bathroom shelf that you’re too scared to pick up? Or products that people have told you to get but you’re not too sure about?

Last month, Louis, along with the other apprentices, took part in our Junior Stylist of the Year competition so we thought we’d find out how he got on…

Hi Louis. So how did you feel when you found out about the Junior Stylist Competition?
I felt a little bit apprehensive at first as I did not know what to expect! I asked some of my colleagues what it was all about and consequently realised it was going to be a lot of fun!

What look did you decide to create for your model?
After a lot of consideration I eventually went for a punk rocker! I wanted to do something modern and 80s styling is making a big comeback at the moment so thought this would be cool. I created a big back combed quiff and generally made her hair big and funky.

How long did it take you to perfect the look?
We practiced regularly for a couple of months – from as soon as I found out about the competition right up to the day itself. I knew how I wanted the hair to work fairly quickly but I kept adding to it and tweaking it along the way, trying to push the boundaries to create something really original.

What props did you use to enhance the look?
As my theme was “funky punky” I wanted to think outside the box. In the end I borrowed a chopper bicycle and had my model pose sitting on it. It was great! No one else used such a big prop so she really stood out – plus Richard John decided to ride it around the circle of models during the interval which was really funny!

Were you nervous at all?
Yes! Although the build-up was more nerve wracking than the event itself! We had to finish off our models’ hair for half an hour in front of an audience of family, friends and colleagues which seemed really intimidating at the time but to be honest I just put my head down and got on with it – it was fine!

How did you do?
Well unfortunately I didn’t win a prize but there was a lot of great competition and I really enjoyed myself so it doesn’t matter.

So, looking forward to doing it all again next year?
Now I know what to expect, I think i will enjoy it a lot more. And I will probably start planning for it a lot earlier!

This year, 17 first and second year student stylists took part to win the cup. Each had to find their own model and create an entire look, from hair to make-up to clothes to props to a pose! They each cut, coloured, composed and created an ensemble ready to be judged over several weeks leading up to the main event.

On the afternoon before the competition the stylists made final preparations and adjustments with a mixture of trepidation and excitement. Each model was prepared within an inch of being completely finished so the very last touches could be performed live, in front of an audience of family, friends and colleagues during the competition itself.

And what an evening it was! There were some fabulous creations incorporating plaits, mohawks, pincurls and all manner of colours and accessories. Props were especially ‘big’ this year with one model sporting an urban street look whilst posed on a retro white chopper!

The half an hour completing their finishing touches under the spotlight came and went in a flurry of hairdryers, curlers and make-up brushes and then it was all over. Models were posed, equipment removed and the judges were invited to scrutinize the stylists’ work for the first time. This year we were thrilled to welcome back judges Geoff Ball from L’Oreal and his wife and salon owner Nadine Ball as well as newcomer Amanda also a salon owner with over 15 years experience.

After the judges had finished marking each model out of a possible 25 points they retired to another room to discuss and their findings. While the entrants waited nervously for the verdict, the audience was treated to a performance by a dance troupe tutored by one of our very own stylists, Elly Palmer.

So to the results! Runner-up was Hayley Hebbard with her ‘Evening Look’. Hayley had first coloured her model’s hair dark red with pieces of blonde and then pinned the hair to the side in lots of perfect curls. The curl theme was continued with make-up patterns which started on the face, moved down the neck onto the shoulder. The entire look was topped off with a beautiful white evening gown.

Ultimate winner was Holly Winzer who is only in the first year of her apprenticeship. Her model was styled like an autumn fairy with hair angled sharply out to one side and her light cotton dress suspended on a wire from her wrist so she appeared to be standing in a breeze. The hair was coloured bright red and copper with tiny finger wave curls which set it off beautifully. Finishing touches were the beautiful fabric leaf fairy wings and the wooden stepping stone logs on which she posed and, of course, a liberal sprinkling of gold fairy dust!

So congratulations to all the trainees who took part – every year the standard just gets higher and higher and we all look forward to the buzz and excitement it creates across all the salons. Looking forward to next year already!

Ladies were invited to attend an information evening all about the latest Clarins product ranges (including makeup) and of course to raise funds for a charity close to all our hearts, national children’s charity, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Guests attended each of three demonstrations, each having a different theme:

• what’s new and what’s now?
• the ever popular Extra Firming and Super Restoratie Ranges
• the latest Spring Make Up Range

Our beauty girls Amy, Jo, Kym and Victoria expertly handled the ‘New and Now’ and ‘Extra Firming & Super Restorative’ presentations while Clarins representative, Steph, generously gave up her time to support the event and demonstrated this season’s Make Up.

During the evening, a raffle was held with two prizes kindly donated by Clarins, both including skincare favourites. One prize was won by Pauline Burton, a regular and valued client to the salon, and fundraiser chairlady Rosemary Hannam won the other!

By the end of the event, £200 had been raised for the NSPCC. Retail Manager Emma Perkins said “The evening was a fantastic. Not only did we raise money for a wonderful cause but we also had lots of fun too!”

Q- I’m thinking of getting a fringe cut but am really nervous about such a big change. How do I know it will suit me?

A – If you are thinking of having a fringe cut, or any kind of style that is vastly different from the one you currently sport, make sure you have a proper consultation with your stylist first. They will be able to advise you about any style you are contemplating and, as experts in their field, they will take into consideration your face shape, overall colouring and so on to help ascertain what will suit you personally. If you do opt for a fringe make sure you pop into your salon between cuts, as a fringe always needs a trim between appointments!

Q- My hair always gets so much lighter when I go on holiday and becomes really thin and damaged. How can I prevent this and repair my hair?

A- The best course of action here is prevention is better than cure. Make sure you take some professional hair products with you when you go on holiday so you know your hair is protected from heat, sun damage, chlorine, humidity or any other environmental conditions you subject your tresses to. Paul Mitchell has a Color Protect range which is its great for lengthening the life of your colour as well as making your hair look refreshed and healthy. There are lots of other protective and preventative products you can use so make sure you get some bespoke advice before you go off on your travelss.

If the damage has already been done and your hair is frazzled from too much sun you will need to visit a salon for a series of deep conditioning treatments. These will help replace lost moisture and nutrients as well as soothing your scalp. Again, there are several deep conditioning products you can use at home to help top up moisture levels.

Q- Is there anything I can do between colour appointments to reduce the amount of noticeable root regrowth?

A- Firstly, if you are having a full head tint perhaps you could break up the colour with some highlights or lowlights or a colour that more closely matches your natural hair, thereby breaking up your parting and making roots less noticeable for longer. If you are having highlights anyway consider a half-way colour appointment, having a half head or crown and parting colour applied.

Q- Can I have my hair coloured/permed when I am pregnant?

A- Yes of course. There is nothing damaging or harmful about having a hair treatment during pregnancy and most of the stories you hear are urban myths. The only possible negative reaction is that a colour or perm lotion may not work as effectively as usual which is due to raised hormone levels. If you are concerned, ask your stylist to perform a patch test on a small clipping of your hair to see how the treatment will react – then you can proceed with confidence.

Q- Is short hair easier to manage then longer hair?

A- This depends entirely on how easy you find managing your own hair. Longer hair takes longer to dry but short hair can sometimes be harder to style. If you are thinking of going from long hair to short hair make sure you talk to your stylist first to establish exactly what the implications are. A good stylist will always show you how to manage your own hair at home so it really is worth picking their brains!

Well the music awards event of the year, The Brits, came and went with a bang this month, with lots of amazing performances from A-list artists such as Coldplay, Kings of Leon, newcomer Duffy, Lady GaGa, Brandon Flowers, The Killers and many more.

Kings of Leon won International Group, Duffy picked up 3 awards for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and Mastercard British Album while Coldplay walked away empty handed for a change! The show climaxed with an amazing performance from The Pet Shop Boys who received this year’s Outstanding Contribution to Music award for 20 years of pioneering electro-pop.

There were lots of celebrities in attendance to enjoy the proceedings, all dressed in fabulous designer outfits as usual. Girls Aloud were colour co-ordinated in shades of white and taupe and beautifully coiffed, big bouncy hairstyles – they never let us down in the hair department! Presenter, Kylie Minogue looked better than ever and had 6 wardrobe changes during the show which she co-hosted with James Corden and Matthew Horne.

Overall, a great night was had by all and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the show – can’t wait for next year!

About a year and a half but hopefully it will be a little less because I am really determined to finish my NVQ2 as soon as I can.

Are you still enjoying it?
Yes love it! Hairdressing is still definitely what I want to do!

Are you still getting on with all the staff?
I am still very lucky to work with lots of different people, they are all very nice.

What are you enjoying the most now you are 6 months in?
The  best thing is still cutting and styling – I get so much enjoyment out of making the clients feel and look so much better than when they walked in.

So there are only 2 days left of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ and what a week it has been – with surprise evictions, food rations and Mutya walking out of the house. There is a surprise double eviction tonight and with only 2 days left we wonder who it will be…….

It must be hard being with the same people 24 hours a day, especially people you’ve only just met, and not having much food or sleep.
